Stormwater Inundation of Bullock Creek from Alpha Series Development
FOBC MISSION STATEMENT: “We exist to protect, restore and enhance the public amenity and the environment of Bullock Creek from head waters to its entry point into Lake Wanaka, New Zealand.”
Since the commencement of the Alpha Series housing development in the catchment above the Bullock Creek Wetlands in 2015, failure to adequately provision for Stormwater has caused regular flooding of the Wetlands and pollution of Bullock Creek and ultimately Lake Wanaka.
FOBC has spent thousands of volunteer hours engaging with the Wetland owners (Otago Fish & Game Council), the Alpha Series developer, local government, regional authorities, neighbours and local media to bring attention to the problem and find a timely workable solution before irrevocable damage occurs to the water quality of Bullock Creek and Lake Wanaka.
FOBC will continue to highlight this major stormwater problem to the Otago Regional Council and Queenstown Lakes District Council but in 2024, the Wetland land owners, Otago Fish & Game Council are undertaking an interim project with QLDC to ameliorate the flooding and pollution issues on the site. While OFG/QLDC is undertaking this project, FOBC will be reducing its advocacy role on this issue.
However to ensure that all the valuable FOBC Advocacy work is not lost to the future, FOBC is working to create a timeline which includes a record of all FOBC interactions with the stakeholders involved in this major stormwater problem affecting Bullock Creek and Lake Wanaka.
Click on the Link below to see a Timeline of Advocacy relating to the Alpha Series development stormwater failures. Please note that this Timeline is not complete with respect to all Advocacy interactions and as at Oct 2024 remains an ongoing FOBC project. However, all Flooding Events listed on the timeline are complete.
